Wedding Flower Cost Breakdown, What You're Really Paying For

When a couple tells us a full-service florist quoted them three times what they expected, our first instinct is not to say the florist overcharged. Usually they did not. The gap is almost never markup on flowers. It is labour, and nobody itemises labour.

Here is what actually sits inside a wedding floral quote.

The four things you are buying

1. The stems. The actual flowers. On a typical full-service wedding quote this is 25–35% of the total.

2. Design labour. Someone conditions every stem, builds every piece, and cleans up after. A 20-table wedding with a full bridal party is 20–30 hours of skilled work. At any honest hourly rate this is the largest line in the quote.

3. Overhead. Cooler space, studio rent, vehicles, insurance, waste. Flowers are perishable inventory, a florist who orders for your wedding and has a cancellation eats the entire cost.

4. Setup, delivery and strike. Getting it to the venue, installing it, and in many cases coming back at midnight to take it down.

When you order bulk stems and arrange them yourself, you are buying line 1 and a slice of line 4. That is the whole reason it costs less. It is not a trick, and it is not a lower-quality flower. It is the same farm-direct stem, minus the labour you have decided to do yourself.

What DIY actually saves

Across the bulk orders we quote, couples typically spend 40–60% less than a comparable full-service quote. The range is wide because it depends almost entirely on how much of the work you take on.

The mixed approach is the one we recommend most often and the one couples are happiest with afterwards. Centerpieces are forgiving and repetitive, genuinely fine to DIY. Bridal bouquets and boutonnieres are fiddly, they are in every photograph, and they are the pieces people regret rushing at 7am.

The costs DIY adds that nobody quotes you

Be honest with yourself about these before deciding.

• Time. A full wedding's flowers is 8–14 hours of work across two days, for two to four people. That is a real cost even though no invoice arrives.
• Supplies. Buckets, cutters, flower food, tape, wire, containers. This is a real line rather than a rounding error, and containers alone can quietly become a large number.
• Space. You need somewhere cool to keep hundreds of stems for three days. In July, in a Colorado house without a basement, this is a genuine problem.
• Risk. If something goes wrong on Thursday, you are the one solving it on Friday.

If you have a friend group who will genuinely show up on the Thursday, DIY is one of the best-value decisions in the whole wedding budget. If you are quietly assuming your maid of honour will handle it, price the ready-made option instead.

Where the money goes furthest

Spend on:

• The bridal bouquet. It is in every photograph you keep.
• Anything in the ceremony sightline.
• One substantial piece rather than several small ones.

Save on:

• Greenery. Buy mixed greens rather than named species. Nobody identifies the base layer of a garland.
• Focal flowers with expensive reputations. Carnations in antique tones do the same visual job as garden roses at a fraction of the cost, and last twice as long.
• Secondary flowers. Alstroemeria gives you 4–6 blooms per stem and a two-week vase life. Per bloom it is the best value we sell.
• Cocktail tables and bars. Bud vases read as a design choice, not a compromise.

Do not save on: quantity. Under-ordering is the most expensive mistake, because the fix is a second delivery at short notice, or an arrangement that looks thin in every photograph.

Why we do not publish prices

Two reasons, and neither is coy.

First, flower pricing moves weekly with what the farms are cutting. A published rose price would be wrong within a month, and wrong in both directions.

Second, an event quote depends on your date, your delivery zone, your volume and your palette. A number on a page would either be so hedged as to be useless or so specific as to be misleading.

What we do instead: you send a request, and you get back an itemised quote within one business day: stem counts, colours, delivery window and price. Nothing to sign, nothing to pay, and if we think you have over-ordered we say so.

A fair comparison

If you are weighing us against a full-service florist, compare honestly. They are selling design, installation and someone else's problem. We are selling flowers, and a shorter invoice.

For a couple with a clear vision and willing hands, we are the better deal by a wide margin. For a couple with a complicated installation, a tight timeline, and no appetite for a Thursday evening of stripping foliage, a good full-service florist earns every dollar.
