Best Flowers for Colorado's Dry Climate

Which flowers actually hold up at 5,000 to 9,000 feet in low humidity, wind and hard sun, and which ones we will send you but would rather you didn't order.

Colorado mountain landscape under an open sky

Colorado is a hard place to be a cut flower. Relative humidity on the Front Range routinely sits in the teens, the sun at altitude is punishing, and most outdoor venues catch a reliable afternoon wind. Flowers grown in the humid tropics and shipped here lose water faster than they can take it up.

Some handle it well. Some do not. Here is the honest ranking.

The reliable ones

Carnations and mini carnations

The most durable flower we ship, full stop. Ten to fourteen day vase life, a dense head that holds shape, and genuine tolerance for heat, wind and dry air. Modern varieties in antique mauve, terracotta and burgundy look nothing like the flower people remember. If your event is outdoors, at altitude, or set up hours in advance, this is the safest thing you can order.

Spider mums and poms

Ten to fourteen days, tolerant of warm rooms, and architecturally interesting enough to carry an arrangement alone. Three spider mums in a tall cylinder is a complete piece. For multi-day events and corporate placements they are the most reliable focal flower we carry.

Alstroemeria

Four to six blooms per stem, ten to fourteen day vase life, and unbothered by dry air. Best value per bloom in the catalog. Strip the foliage aggressively. The leaves yellow well before the flowers fade.

Eucalyptus and ruscus

The waxy leaf is the whole reason. It holds moisture in low humidity in a way ferns cannot, and both run 14–21 days. For outdoor mountain venues this is the greenery we recommend by default, and eucalyptus dries rather than browns, so garlands can be kept afterwards.

Statice

Papery straight out of the box and effectively immune to dry air. Tolerates hours out of water during setup. If your arrangements will sit in the sun before guests arrive, statice will look identical when they do.

Sunflowers

Sturdy enough to survive an outdoor setup in wind, and visually strong enough to read across a field. Change the water daily, because they cloud it faster than anything else, and order pollen-free varieties for anything indoors.

The ones that need care

Roses

Fine in Colorado, but the 5–7 day vase life gives you less margin than the durable list. Condition properly, keep them out of direct sun, and they are excellent. Skip a step and the shortfall shows up on the day.

Oriental and Asiatic lilies

Hold up well, with one altitude-specific caveat: buds open faster in warm dry air than the sequence you are expecting. If you want blooms open on Saturday, order tighter than you would at sea level.

Tree fern and leather leaf

Ferns are the least drought-tolerant greenery we carry. Frond edges brown before the stem gives out. Perfectly usable indoors with daily misting; not what we would choose for an exposed outdoor ceremony.

The difficult ones

Hydrangea

We sell a lot of hydrangea and we will keep selling it, because one stem fills a centerpiece and nothing else covers ground like it. But it is the most demanding flower we ship, and Colorado is the hardest place to ship it to.

Hydrangea drinks through its petals as well as its stem. Conditioned correctly (head fully submerged 20–30 minutes on arrival, then deep water topped up daily, misted, kept out of sun) it holds beautifully for four to seven days. Left in a warm room overnight it can collapse in hours.

Order it if you will follow the steps. Do not order it for an outdoor ceremony that will sit unattended in July afternoon sun.

Tulips

A three to seven day vase life, and they keep growing after cutting, up to an inch a day, and bend toward light as they go. An arrangement built Friday has a different shape on Saturday. Beautiful for a spring wedding if you keep them cool and treat the movement as part of the look. Frustrating if you wanted them to stay put.

Practical rules for altitude

Mist daily. Especially anything with a thin petal. It costs nothing and buys a day.

Water depth is not universal. Hydrangea and woody stems want deep water; tulips want three or four inches; most flowers want four to six.

Set up as late as the venue allows. Every hour an arrangement spends in afternoon sun is an hour off the end of its life.

Weight your bases. Ridge-top venues in Douglas County and along the foothills catch predictable afternoon wind. Tall thin arrangements on pedestals are the usual casualty.

Above 8,000 feet, choose from the durable list. Vail, Breckenridge and Summit County venues are a different environment again. Carnations, mums, alstroemeria and eucalyptus. We will send hydrangea to Vail if you ask, and we will also tell you what we think of the idea.

The short version

If you want one sentence: build your Colorado wedding around carnations, alstroemeria, mums and eucalyptus, then spend your remaining budget on whatever focal flower you actually love. The durable base carries the room, and the flower you love only has to survive being photographed.
